Exploring the Overberg: South Africa’s Coas...
Stretching from the dramatic peaks of the Kogelberg to the windswept shores of Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
When it comes to capturing the raw beauty of nature, it comes as no surprise that it is done to perfection at the meeting point of two mighty oceans. The clash of these two proverbial titans has given birth to one of the most beautiful places on earth, rich in biodiversity. Showcasing and aiming to protect this natural beauty in all its glory we find the De Hoop Nature Reserve.
Fast becoming a popular getaway for city slickers, the De Hoop Nature Reserve serves up a smorgasbord of views and activities to enjoy. The Reserve covers 34 000 hectares of land and includes a Marine Reserve stretching 5km (3 nautical miles) out to sea, coincidently one of the biggest Marine Reserve areas in Africa. The Reserve also makes out a part of the Cape Floral Kingdom Protected Areas.
Among the many outdoor activities like whale watching, biking, and bird watching the De Hoop Nature Reserve also holds one of South Africa’s best hiking trails, The Whale Trail. Stretching from Potberg to Koppie Alleen, the trail leads hikers through some of the most breath-taking landscapes in the country while including 5 overnight stops. Hiking on the Reserve includes spotting one of the various bird species found in the area including Ostriches. Bigger mammals like Bontebok, Eland, Red Wildebeest, Cape Mountain Zebra and Baboons can also be seen along the trails.
Other activities on the Reserve also include eco quad biking, snorkelling in the rock pools on the coast, star-gazing and identification. You can also choose to enjoy guided Fynbos walks or interpretive marine walks where qualified guides will share their knowledge on the indigenous fauna and flora of the area.
So whether you want to trek through the fields or just relax on the beach and do some snorkelling on the azure rock pools, De Hoop Nature Reserve has it all. The Reserve offers great accommodation options, caters for weddings and functions and welcomes day visitors. Book and visit today for an unforgettable outdoor adventure!
