The Klein River and all its wonders

The Klein River and all its wonders

The village of Stanford is true little gem and definitely not to be missed when travelling through the Overberg. Fondly known as one of South Africa’s favourite villages, Stanford is home to quirky country folk, stunning landscapes and a plethora of fauna and flora as it is located in the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Making up part of this charming village and no doubt adding to its laid-back atmosphere is the beautiful Klein River. Consisting of 80km of meandering stream, the Klein River only stretches across 5km as the crow flies as it makes its way through the village to finally end up in the Hermanus Lagoon.

But before that happens, it offers a number of splashing activities and the reason for Stanfordians to meet at the end of King Street. The big lawn and shady trees make for the perfect picnic spot which can be followed by a refreshing dip in the river’s cool mountain waters. From here you can also launch your canoe or kayak and paddle your way all along the river bends while waving hello to neighbours walking along the banks and taking in the beautiful scenery.

Another popular activity that has emerged due to the river is the Stanford River Cruises. Grab the family or a group of friends and take a leisurely cruise along the river with one of the friendly local skippers. The cruises include a hearty South African braai, great bird watching and swimming and tubing along the way. This is definitely one of the best ways to enjoy an Overberg sunset!

Water babies can rest assured of never being too far from the water by choosing accommodation close to the river. These luxury accommodations will take care of you as you explore the town and fall asleep (and wake up) to the ebb and flow of the river.

As well as enjoying its beauty and the variety of activities it offers, be sure not to miss out on the river’s namesake produce at Klein River Cheese Farm. Matured for over 2 decades, the farm offers a range of award-winning artisanal cheeses in their homely cheese shop next to the beautiful gardens and play area for the kids which are very popular for picnics during the summer months.

So whenever you find yourself in Stanford, be sure to stop by the Klein River even if it is just to dip your toes in after a long day of exploring the many wonders of the Overberg.
