Exploring the Overberg: South Africa’s Coas...
Stretching from the dramatic peaks of the Kogelberg to the windswept shores of Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
We love the fact that the Nuwejaars Wetlands is one of the best-kept secret sunset spots in the Overberg in winter. Although the wetlands are generally closed for the rainy season, we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to take a peep and share some photos with you so that you can plan your future trip to this Special Management Area.
Who would have thought a game safari at sunset was possible in the Overberg? Covering 47,000 hectares, the Nuwejaars Wetlands are inhabited by game, birdlife and indigenous fynbos.
With prior arrangement, in specified seasons, a knowledgeable guide will join you on a colourful journey to discover the treasure-trove of natural jewels the wetlands have to offer. Come face to face with the mighty hippopotamus, buffalo and the hartebeest, once extinct on the Agulhas Plain. Pack your birding checklist just in case you spot some of the 235 bird species, some nocturnal, as they are illuminated by the setting sun.
There is something quite different about what nature has to offer here in the wetlands. Time seems to stand still while the winter sunsets hang on to the horizon for what feels like an eternity before they suddenly slip away from sight leaving no trace of themselves in the cool night air.
