The Importance of Dog Grooming

Most people when they hear about a dog being groomed think of fancy hair cuts, painted toenails and ribbons in a dog’s hair. It is so much more than that!

It all starts with brushing. Brushing is the single most important part of grooming! Every dog, whether they have short hair or long, needs to be brushed on a regular basis. It not only loosens up any dirt on their hair while stimulating a healthy skin and coat, but when done right it relaxes your dog. Regular brushing helps you keep tabs on any potential problems including pests like ticks and fleas while also helping you spot skin problems early, enabling you to treat them before they spiral out of control.

After a good brush, a bath is often the next step in grooming. It is important to remember that even though they are part of the family, a dog’s skin is much more sensitive than ours and thus our shampoos are often too harsh to use on them. A shampoo made especially for dogs is the best and safest option. When washing dogs, lukewarm water is best and much more pleasant for them too. Please do remember that unlike us, their skin needs time to recover between washes so (unless instructed otherwise by a vet as part of a treatment plan) avoid washing your dog too often. Once every 2 weeks is the safest bet, once a month is even better. Washing them more frequently than that you run the risk of drying out their skin and causing skin problems. It is also essential to ensure you rinse the shampoo out of their coat very well, any shampoo that gets left behind can cause itchiness and skin problems.

It is always a good idea to do something fun after a brush (and wash) so your dog forms a positive association with it. When done well, grooming is a great way to spend time with them and strengthen your bond even more than it already is. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a well-groomed dog?
