ROAD STATUS UPDATE: R44 Clarence Drive closure between 7 - 23 March 2023

The following press release has been issued by the Department of Transport and Public Works on 3 March 2023 with regard to the closure of Clarence Drive (R44) for emergency repairs:

From Tuesday, 7 March to Thursday, 23 March 2023, Clarence Drive (the R44) will be undergoing emergency slope stabilisation repairs. 

• From Monday to Friday, it will be closed between 08:00 and 18:00. 
• Between 18:00 and 08:00 it will be open with a stop-and-go system in place. 
• On Saturdays it will be closed between 08:00 and 15:00. 
• It will be opened thereafter from Saturday at 15:00 until Monday morning at 08:00 with a stop-and-go system in place.

Heavy rains on 11 and 12 December last year caused the slopes above this section of the R44 to become unstable. The slope stabilisation repairs will be done by Civils 2000 (Pty) Ltd and are scheduled to be completed by 29 March 2023.

Road users are requested to use alternative routes during this period, preferably via the N2 The safety and convenience of the travelling public is of utmost importance to the Western Cape Government. Every effort is being made to minimise disruptions for visitors to and residents of the area.

“The condition of the road infrastructure has deteriorated as a result of severe rains. The Clarence Drive is a key contributor to our economy. Thus, an emergency repairs intervention has had to be undertaken” said the Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers.

“This intervention is underpinned by The Western Cape Government’s ethos of delivering services with urgency” added the Minister.
