The fire that is burning in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve remains contained inside the planned block.
There are still large pockets ('islands') of unburned material within the block that might flare-up and burn fiercely. These flare-ups do not pose a threat to any properties, including those in De Kelders and Voëlklip where most of the calls from concerned residents emanate.
Continuous flare-ups on the perimeter of the fireline are challenging the teams. Firefighters are dealing with the various hotspots.
The estimated total area burned is 2 315ha and ± 600ha has burned in the dunes since Tuesday.
Goals for today:
• Mopping-up operations on the perimeters
• Contain any fire flare-ups as they arise
A total of 54 firefighters are attending to the incident today.
Overstrand Fire Services, CapeNature, Greater Overberg Fire Protection Association (goFPA) and Working on Fire (WoF) will remain on scene 24/7 until at least Monday, 21 March 2022.
