September is the month where we celebrate not only our heritage but it is also the month for focussing on sustainable tourism and the planting of trees as a practical gesture of sustainable environmental management.
The theme for the year 2022 is “Forests and sustainable production and consumption” and the Arbour Month campaign gives prominence to tree planting and greening to reach the target of planting at least a million trees annually.
On 1 and 2 September, the Environmental Management Section of the Overstrand Municipality planted Forest Waterberry (Syzigium gerrardii) trees and did awareness raising on the importance of trees at Mount Pleasant Primary School, Vrolike Vinkies Educare, Hermanus Primary School, Generation School, Wippie & Snippie Pre-School, Paddakoor Pre-School and Huis Lettie Theron.
Hermanus Tourism and the Whale Crier, Bulelani Ngidi, joined the team to educate and spread awareness on why whales visit our waters.
