Spring Exterior Wall Painting Tips

Winter can leave its mark on your exterior walls, and some of the damage isn’t obvious until you know what to look for.

Before you open that tin of paint this spring, take a walk around your home and check for:

• Chalky residue when you rub the wall
• Hairline cracks in the plaster, especially beneath windowsills
• Dark, damp patches near the base of walls
• Flaking or lifting paint around gutters and downpipes
• Moss or algae on shaded walls

Don’t paint over damp walls! If moisture is still trapped in the plaster, painting over it can lead to bubbling and peeling later on.
