Wine and Co first opened its doors in 1998 so this will be our 25th year of trading and although there have been a few owners over the years since Bartho and Sune Eksteen first had the idea of an independent wine merchant, we have become known as the place to find the 'cool wines' (think of tiny allocations like Alheit, Crystallum, Damascene, Luddite, Mullineux, Porseleinberg, Restless River, Sadie, Savage et al, and alternative or 'orange' wine, PetNat's or a skin-contact Fernao Peres for example). Some of these, and other smaller, so-called garagiste winemakers, only produce a barrel or two so there is not much available and we actively seek them out.

Since taking over in 2018 we have continued stocking these hard-to-find 'boutique' wines and judging from our new and returning (and happy) customers, we are doing the right thing. Now in Stock: Golden Phoenix vs The White Lotus:

This just-released white "Bordeaux-style" white blend is a collaboration between DA Hanekom of Bloemendal and wine-guy Kyle Martin.

The wine: Golden Phoenix Vs The White Lotus. A first-official-Caravel Wines white wine. Another wine from Caravel Wines and legendary Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon winemaker Andri Hanekom of Bloemendal and DA Hanekom Familie Wyne. This wine is a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc from Vineyards high up on the 'Suider Terras' sweeping vineyard on the Kanonberg in Durbanville. Sauvignon Blanc is powerful and steely, and this is tapered down with Sémillon that has been in barrel for 2 years.. it is a delicate and focused wine. Best enjoyed ice cold on its own, and is really versatile and suited to many different dishes as it warms up a tad. Only 1200 bottles produced.

The story: Legendary Pai Mei (The White Lotus) of The White Lotus Clan is an almost invincible Kung Fu overlord, featured in many films including Kill Bill, Clan Of The White Lotus and Abbot Of Shaolin. He represents Sauvignon Blanc, a powerful, unchallenged presence in the wine industry. He is challenged (or complemented rather) by Golden Phoenix, a clan of upstarts who were almost forgotten (Sémillon). Sauvignon Blanc, together with Sémillon produces an outstanding white wine blend.

Saturday | Sunday Weekend Tasting:

This weekend we will be tasting the Newton John Sauvignon Blanc.

The Newton Johnson guys tell us that "The Hemel-en-Aarde and Elgin valleys are admired for their buoyant, fresh and aromatic white wines. We take a more artful approach with this Sauvignon Blanc blend, aspiring to create a wine with more beauty than exuberance. The 6% blended oaked Semillon broadens this texture, combining a creamy sensation with the dryness and length of natural acidity."

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels - much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.

In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
