In Stock: Lourens Family Wines
He is such a nice guy, always smiling! Franco Lourens has just released his new vintages and here are his notes...
The ‘allocation season’ is in full swing and we have just received the new Crystallum range! They are, as ever, outstanding, and we are happy to have a few of each available. Here are Christian Eedes’ tasting notes:
Crystallum Ferrum Chardonnay 2022: Grapes from the Shaw’s Mountain area of the Overberg. Matured for 10 months in a combination of 300- and 500-litre barrels, 10% new. Citrus and some flinty reduction on the nose while the palate has concentrated fruit, driving acidity and a saline finish. Forceful in the best sense, precise and poised. Alc: 13.23%. CE’s rating: 96/100.
Crystallum Clay Shales Chardonnay 2022: Grapes from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Matured for 10 months in a combination of 300- and 500-litre barrels, 15% new. Citrus and oatmeal on the nose while the palate is that much richer and rounder than its counterpart above. Great texture, layers of flavour and well-integrated acidity. Alc: 13.3%. CE’s rating: 95/100.
Crystallum Mabalel Pinot Noir 2022: Grapes from Elandskloof, no whole-bunch fermentation. Red cherry, musk and a little white pepper on the nose. The palate has good clarity of fruit, bright acidity and soft tannins, yet the finish remains pleasingly dry. Elegant and full of charm. Alc: 13.54%. CE’s rating: 94/100.
Crystallum Cuvée Cinema Pinot Noir 2022: Grapes from Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. 60% whole-bunch fermentation. The nose shows red and black berries, fynbos and a hint of white pepper. The palate has a dense core of fruit, bright acidity and lightly grippy feel to the finish. Precisely made, this stands out for its purity and uncompromisingly dry finish. Alc: 13.87%. CE’s rating: 96/100.
Crystallum Bona Fide Pinot Noir 2022: Grapes from Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. 50% whole-bunch fermentation. Dark berries, orange, cured meat, spice and earth on the nose while the palate is rich and flavourful with fine tannins and a gently savoury finish. This is rounder and fuller than its counterparts above but perhaps less focused. Last vintage of this cuvée due to the limitations on quality posed by leaf-roll virus. Alc: 13.82%. CE’s rating: 93/100.

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
Please note that our website does not show the complete range of wine that we have in stock, so please do contact us if you are looking for something not listed online, especially those that are 'allocation' only.
We offer free delivery in and around Hermanus, and free shipping to major centres around South Africa for orders over R1600. Please contact us for international shipping rates.
