Now in Stock - City on a Hill!

Here’s a reminder that with access to The Valley still being quite difficult - but not impossible - we are helping the Bosman Hermanus guys by being their ‘Tasting Room in Town’ and have some of their Hemel en Aarde wines available to taste (and purchase) in our shop. Please do stop in to taste their wines…

Now in Stock - City on a Hill!

André Bruyns was assistant winemaker working with David and Nadia Sadie and is now farm manager at Lammershoek but since 2015 he has been making his own wine under the “City on a Hill” label. This range is always hard to find and luckily we now have a few of them on our shelf and here are WineMag’s Christian Eedes’ Tasting Notes:

Sky 2022: From a Paardeberg vineyard of Chenin Blanc planted in 1998 just under 400m above sea level. A hint of struck-match reduction before blossom, herbs, pear and lime on the nose. The palate is lean and linear with arresting acidity and a pithy finish. Taut and pure. Alc: 12.5%. Christian Eedes’ rating: 96/100.

Sk’Windjiesvlei 2022: Tinta Das Baroccas (to quote the back label) from a 1962 vineyard farmed by Adi Badenhorst. 10% whole-bunch fermentation. Complex aromatics of red and black berries, lavender, fynbos, earth and spice while the palate has great structure and harmony about it - lovely fruit expression, bright acidity and fine tannins. Intense but not weighty. Alc: 13.5%. Christian Eedes’ rating: 94/100.

City on a Hill Red 2020: 53% Syrah, 23% Tinta Barocca, 12% Cinsault and 12% Mourvèdre. The nose is fragrant and enticing with red and black berries along with fynbos, earth and spice. The palate comes across as well balanced and carefully judged - medium bodied, bright acidity and fine tannins. Christian Eedes’ rating: 93/100.

City on a Hill Syrah 2020: Grapes from a Paardeberg vineyard on granite and another north of Malmesbury on clay. Heady aromatics of red and black berries, violets and white pepper while the palate is full-bodied and quite forceful. A wine that’s pretty much bursting with fruit, the tannins fine yet mouth-coating - 75% whole-bunch fermentation and the alcohol given as 14% on the label. Christian Eedes’ rating: 92/100.

About Us

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels - much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.

In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.

Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
