In Stock: Lourens Family Wines
He is such a nice guy, always smiling! Franco Lourens has just released his new vintages and here are his notes...
Just a reminder that with access to The Valley still being quite difficult - but not impossible - we are helping the Bosman Hermanus guys by being their ‘Tasting Room in Town’ and have some of their Hemel en Aarde wines available to taste (and purchase) in our shop. Please do stop in to taste their wines…
Winemaker Franco Lourens has been producing wine under his own label since 2016. His philosophy is simple: “We truly believe that the special vineyards and unique sites where our grapes come from, has the biggest influence on our wines. We don’t add any yeast, acid, enzymes or fining agents and we only use older neutral oak barrels for maturation.” His total production is not very big and the brand is still relatively unknown, but it certainly shouldn’t be! Here are WineMag’s Christian Eedes’ Tasting Notes:
Lindi Carien White Blend 2022: 52% Chenin Blanc, 27% Verdelho, 13% Colombar, 5% Grenache Blanc (five days skin contact) and 3% Palomino sourced variously from Piekenierskloof, Stellenbosch and Voor-Paardeberg. Matured for 10 months in old 300- and 500-litre barrels. Some floral perfume before stone fruit, orange, spice and a little waxy character on the nose while the palate has good fruit weight, moderate acidity and a gently savoury finish. A wine with a subtle oxidative quality, nicely tangy with a little bit of phenolic grip. Alc: 13%. Christian Eedes’ rating 94/100.
Skuinskap Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc 2022: From a Piekenierskloof vineyard planted in 1977. Matured for 10 months in old 500-litre barrels. Pear, nectarine, flowers, hay and earth on the nose while the plate has excellent fruit density and punchy acidity before a persistent and deeply savoury finish. Poised and super-complex, a singular wine. Alc: 13.2%. Christian Eedes’ rating: 97/100.
Howard John Red Blend 2022: 44% Grenache, 28% Cinsault and 28% Syrah, all sourced from the Swartland, some 40% fermented with stems, before maturation lasting 10 months in old 300- and 500-litre barrels. Expressive aromatics of red and black berries, orange, olive, lavender and herbs while the palate has good fruit concentration, snappy acidity and crunchy tannins. Juicy on entry but ends savoury, the different components combining to good effect. Christian Eedes’ rating: 94/100.
Lua Ilse Grenache Noir 2022: Grapes from a Piekenierskloof vineyard approximately 25 years old. 25% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 10 months in older 500-litre barrels. Cranberry, raspberry, pomegranate, fynbos, earth and white pepper on the nose while the palate is full but balanced – pleasingly ripe fruit, bright acidity and densely packed tannins. Concentrated with a dry finish. Alc: 14%. Christian Eedes’ rating: 93/100.

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
Please note that our website does not show the complete range of wine that we have in stock, so please do contact us if you are looking for something not listed online, especially those that are 'allocation' only.
We offer free delivery in and around Hermanus, and free shipping to major centres around South Africa for orders over R1600. Please contact us for international shipping rates.
