In Stock: Lourens Family Wines
He is such a nice guy, always smiling! Franco Lourens has just released his new vintages and here are his notes...
This is the 12th release from Savage Wines, which sadly does not include Duncan’s “Not Tonight Josephine” straw wine due to the wet conditions after harvest. The rest of the range is outstanding! Here are his tasting notes:
SAVAGE WHITE 2023 (76% Sauvignon Blanc, 24% Semillon): A very classic Savage white showing blackcurrant leaf, pineapple, pear and grapefruit, backed by subtle wood spice. The wine is textural in spite of the cooler vintage due to 100% malolactic fermentation. The palate is tightly wound with characteristic salinity, texture and length. A wine that will continue to reward over the next 10 years.
SAVAGE RED 2022 (Syrah): 2022 was a warmer vintage yielding a Savage Red with a touch more generosity. Plums, lavender, cola, violets and the characteristic Langverwagt white pepper. The palate remains taut and focused, complemented by the granitic soil tannin. A wine that will drink well over the next 10 years.
NEVER BEEN ASKED TO DANCE 2023 (Chenin Blanc): 2023 has produced a really classic Never Been Asked to Dance. Granitic soils allow for a natural freshness and grip in the wines with characteristic yellow fruit, oatmeal and fynbos flavours. The vintage shows the typical saline core and purity we have come to expect from this old girl. Never Been Asked to Dance drinks well young but will reward for many years to come.
FOLLOW THE LINE 2023 (Cinsault): Follow the Line always displays aromatic purity, strawberries, cherries, rose petals, violets and subtle white pepper. Soft and perfumed with the characteristic freshness of granitic soils. Follow the Line drinks beautifully young but will age well up to 8-10 years.
THIEF IN THE NIGHT 2023 (Grenache): Slightly less aromatic than Follow the Line, Thief in the Night displays the purity and power of Grenache. Cherries, bramble, herbs and subtle spice with a savoury tension and firm chalky tannins. This 2023 has a touch more ripeness and is one of the most complete wines we have made, courtesy of a classic vintage.
GIRL NEXT DOOR 2023 (Syrah): Girl Next Door is a wine that expresses its location. Violets, plums, cherries, white pepper and black olives, all held together by a tightly wound saline core, complemented by the cold Atlantic. 2023 is our most perfumed example to date, thanks to the new site and classic 2023 vintage. Our prettiest Girl yet.
ARE WE THERE YET 2023 (69% Touriga Nacional, 31% Syrah): The 2023 shows the class of the vintage with a more tightly wound wine. Plums, cherries and blueberries with an underlying oyster shell salinity and grippy tannins. This wine will age beautifully over the next 10 years.

About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in independent specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known local wines and MCC's, we also stock craft gin and beer, imported wines, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
