A pair of great wines from the Hemel en Aarde have just been released! Made by Nadia Newton Johnson.
The winemaking pair of Andrea and Chris Mullineux need no introduction at all and we are very happy to have their new Chenin releases in-store! Here are their tasting notes:
Mullineux GRANITE Chenin Blanc 2023: This perfumed Chenin, with a vibrant minerality, is from a very special old vineyard (Eikelaan) planted in the decomposed Granite soils high up on the slopes of the Paardeberg.
Tasting Note: The cooler evenings of the long 2023 growing season, worked in unison with the GRANITE soils to develop upfront yellow citrus blossom, summer fynbos and hints of green tea welcoming one’s senses. This leads to a gorgeous pithy and minerality driven mid-palate and the ever-present vibrancy that our Single Terroir Chenin Blancs are known for. As to be expected from its reflective Granitic soils, this wine will boast a slow and extended linear progression as it ages and will provide the most drinking pleasure if decanted. Alcohol 14.0 % - RS 1,8 g/l - TA 6.5 g/l - pH 3.30
Mullineux IRON Chenin Blanc 2023: The Rondomskrik vineyard planted on Koffieklip soils yields small, concentrated Chenin grapes resulting in a rich and smoothly textured wine.
Tasting Note: The IRON Chenin Blanc sees the highest natural extract of our three main Single Terroir white wines which lends to its upfront aromatics, a lower sugar-to-alcohol conversion as well as focused acidity. During December, just before harvest, these deep clay soils retain water and inhibit excess moisture uptake in the berries which in turn enhances its concentration. Notable yellow orchard summer fruits, fresh orange peel and a slight flintiness welcome one on the nose, with a multi-layered palate and slightly saline finish that round off this beautifully textural wine. Its ageability is sure to exceed two decades, and it is thus recommended that the wine is decanted when opened young. Alcohol 13.5 % - RS 1.9 g/l - TA 5.6 g/l - pH 3.40
Mullineux SCHIST Chenin Blanc 2023: The rocky Schist soils of Roundstone Farm, the home of Mullineux, produce Chenins with a textured richness and zesty acidity.
Tasting Note: The 2023 growing season cool and long with no heat spikes, which contributed to the inviting phenolic balance, full palate and jubilant freshness that you would come to expect from SCHIST soils in these growing conditions. Highlighted by fresh quince, white peach and hints of lime, the nose of this Chenin Blanc is greatly inviting, and it follows through with a firm chalky texture and a lively, zesty finish. The ageing potential is at least 20 years, and this wine will show optimally if decanted. Alcohol 14.0% - RS 1.7 g/l - TA 6.3 g/l - pH 3.35
