Wine and Co - The Savage Wines...

After what may feel like an endless cabin-fever inducing winter where, believe it or not, we had snow on the peaks up in the Valley, it might seem that spring is slowly making its appearance in the Overberg. The dams are filling up nicely, and a few whales have arrived too, so all we need now is "COVID-Level back to normal" to end the year off on a bit of a high. The 2020 allocation releases are also slowly coming through to Hermanus, so this week we have the new Savage range on the shelves.

THE SAVAGE RELEASE

SAVAGE WHITE 2019

(64% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Semillon, 16% Chenin Blanc) Fruit sourced from Kaaimansgat, Villiersdorp, Piekenierskloof and Stellenbosch. Wine Safari Score: 95+/100 Greg Sherwood MW.

SAVAGE RED 2018

100% pure Stellenbosch Syrah. Wine Safari Score: 95/100 Greg Sherwood MW.

FOLLOW THE LINE 2019

89% Cinsault from 39 year old dry-farmed Darling bush vines together with 11% Syrah from the same property. Wine Safari Score: 96/100 Greg Sherwood MW.

THIEF IN THE NIGHT 2019

(61% Grenache, 26% Cinsault, 13% Syrah) All components were picked on the same day from the same property in the Piekenierskloof and co-fermented. Wine Safari Score: 94+/100 Greg Sherwood MW.

GIRL NEXT DOOR 2019

Made in minuscule quantities from a salty, windswept and battered 0.38 hectare 14 year old Syrah vineyard near Fish Hoek in Cape Town. Wine Safari Score: 97+/100 Greg Sherwood MW.

ARE WE THERE YET 2019

From Malgas, 50% Touriga Nacional and 50% Syrah from 14 year old bush vines grown in river pebble and shale. Picked on the same day and co-fermented. Wine Safari Score: 94+/100 Greg Sherwood MW.

Duncan says, "The drought that plagued the Western Cape for years was again ruthless in the vineyards with our production down by 12%. Birds also took their toll decimating two of the blocks we work with. As a result, the range is two wines short with no ‘Never Been Asked To Dance’ or ‘Not Tonight Josephine’ being bottled from the vintage. The challenges were offset by incredible quality but the vintage showcases the power of 2015 with the elegance of 2017 all wrapped into one. The wines across the board are a touch more vinous while again retaining the purity and finesse we strive for at Savage."

There are not many of the Savage wines available, so fastest fingers, etc...

We are open Monday - Thursday: 9am - 5pm.

About Us

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.

In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, La Trappe Trappist Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty or you are not satisfied with the quality, we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.

Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
