He is such a nice guy, always smiling! Franco Lourens has just released his new vintages and here are his notes...
If you are planning on coming to Hermanus during the December/Christmas holidays, do not forget to contact us soon so that we can have your wine ready for collection - just send us your list. Alternatively, some of our customers give us a budget with their preferences and allow us to make a selection for them and we have had great feedback!
Remember that if we do not usually stock your favourite wine, spirit or beer, we can certainly order them in for you so just drop us an e-mail (wineandco@whalemail.co.za) to let us know what you need.
Perhaps something of a surprise from a winemaker who is best known for consistently making good Pinotages and the Kanonkop red blends, this Chardonnay from Abrie Beeslaar was made in a style to closely follow a French white Burgundy. He used a combination of 20% new French oak barrels, older French oak and ceramic pots for fermentation, which was followed by 12 months on the lees before bottling. Abrie's tasting notes say, "Attractive aromas of white pear, ripe orange, and kumquat fruit on the nose. The palate is supple and rich, with texture and weight derived from ageing the wine on the lees. A delicate and bright seam of acidity is beautifully balanced with the citrus fruit and subtle oak nuances. A streak of minerality and hints of wet river pebbles add further complexity to this focussed, poised and elegant wine. Deliciously crisp and mouth-watering on the finish, with lingering flavours of ripe tangerines." We are lucky to have a few on our shelves!
Saturday | Sunday Weekend tasting: Kara-Tara Pinot Noir is a joint-venture between Rudger van Wyk (2018 Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year) and José Conde of Stark-Condé Wines. The name Kara-Tara refers to a small town near Knysna, where winemaker Rudger van Wyk grew up. Translated from the traditional Khoisan, it means “deep dark shadows” and refers to the Karatara river that runs through the town.
The grapes are sourced from carefully-selected premium vineyards in the Elgin region. An elegant, lightly-wooded style of Pinot Noir showing classic strawberry and red cherry notes coupled with a hint of spice. A firm, yet silky-smooth tannin-structure supports the lovely bright fruit characteristics of the wine. Join us this weekend to taste this beautiful Pinot Noir.

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
Thank you for your support - stay safe - see you soon!
