Made by Paul Jordaan (assistant to Eben Sadie), the Bartàs 2021 is a Chenin Blanc from a special terroir in Stellenbosh. Paul tells us,
"This wine is a product of (terroir; a sense of a place & belonging) + (adventure; past, present & future).
From a wild place
where you have to find your path(self)
through the bush(vines)
towards an edge (and the height of your potential).
In Africa we call this ’Bundu-bashing'.
In French they call it ‘Bartàs’."
Why Chenin Blanc? Chenin Blanc is an amazing grape, a very honest varietal in our opinion. We are trying to explore all aspects of the grape and while doing so, apply what we have learned and repeat.
What’s the story? Chenin Blanc bush vines, planted in 1978, on shallow and warm granite soils in the Helderberg, the most southern part of the Stellenbosch region. Hand picked and whole bunch pressed into old oak barrels, spontaneously fermented and matured in 500 litres barrels for 12 months, before being racked and bottled.
Why that block? The block is situated in the Helderberg area on the Rustenhof farm. The unirrigated bushvines are planted on and around a small hill, consisting of decomposed granite. The vines are facing almost directly into the predominant South-Eastern wind. On top of that, only a stone's throw away from False Bay. Both of these, the wind and the South Atlantic Ocean, have a phenomenal cooling effect during the summer months as well as the general growing pattern throughout the year.
What do we taste? On the nose, we pick up a variety of citrus, fresh fruits, green pineapple and cantaloupe. The palate shows precision and tension – pure fruit plays off against a snappy, racy acidity before a finish that is long and pithy, wonderfully refined with a crystalline structure.
There were only 1800 bottles made, of which we managed to snag 6!

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
Thank you for your support - stay safe - see you soon!
