We are always happy to support Doug and Paul of Maanschijn! They have just released their "Brunch Club" range, and here they tell us the "Brunch Club" story and their tasting notes...
This year, our most established (and elusive) brand arrives on the scene with a new look, feel and tension. The new offering, vintage 2022, also happens to be our fifth release of this collective - one which we take great pleasure in creating for you to pair with your sun-filled festivities. Enter, Brunch Club 2022!
Imagine a shimmering summer’s day, al fresco dining and flowery breezes. In pairing these nuances, the Brunch Club personifies our exploration of ethereal wine style: an ancient method sparkling, macerated white and radiant red. Designed as refreshing accompaniments to friendly gatherings, they’re deft, fresh and are best served chilled, with brunch.
This is a category which hasn't been explored in great depth. Whilst our other fine wines explore the proverbial "place", here, we summarise the Brunch Club's intention quite simply, "Fun wines exploring style." We use alternative winemaking methods, which ultimately yields three wines lighter in alcohol, lower in preservative and packed with personality. These methods of low intervention include the earlier harvesting of fruit, indigenous fermentations, gentle pressing and extraction, aged French oak barrels, zero fining and the addition of little-to-no preservative. These actions are important to us, as we're certain they all contribute to the exciting and honest nature which the Brunch Club wines manifest.
The Stonefields vineyard of Sauvignon blanc is celebrated throughout the Brunch Club. Planted in 2016, and farmed organically since day one, it continues to gift us with fruit of exceptional quality despite the tough growing conditions along the Klein River lagoon. Managed by Doug, the conscientious approach in the vineyard is shared, and we truly believe this is the best way to promote both soil fertility and healthy wine culture.
Brunch Club Methode Ancestrale 2022: Naturally fermented, at low temperature. Four months on fine lees. Light straw and green hues on presentation. Complex and atypical Sauvignon blanc characteristics, with aromas of nutty nougat, pear, white peach and melon. The mousse is delicate and clean, with a fine consistency. Kiwi fruit, yellow apple and lime cordial lead the textured palate. 100% Sauvignon blanc. Walker Bay Wine of Origin.
Brunch Club Dry White 2022: Naturally fermented, in partial maceration. Six months in French oak. Full straw on the eye. The nose is fascinating, presenting fennel bulb, red currant, red apple and apricot skin. The palate is layered and textured, supported by a light tannic twist. Flavours of roasted peach, salted pistachio and cherry kernel compliment the saline, mineral finish. 100% Sauvignon blanc. Walker Bay Wine of Origin.
Brunch Club Dry Red 2022: Naturally fermented, with gentle maceration. Six months in French oak. Vibrant crimson and ruby hues in the glass. Savoury aromatics on entrance, which make way to blackcurrant, wild strawberry and pomegranate. The palate is supple and juicy, framed by freshness over tannin. Subtle black cherry, raspberry and sumac complete this light red. Blend: 50% Syrah, 45% Grenache noir & 5% Sauvignon blanc. Walker Bay Wine of Origin.
The "Brunch Club" is very limited, so the usual applies - fastest fingers first!

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
Thank you for your support - stay safe - see you soon!
