In Stock: Lourens Family Wines
He is such a nice guy, always smiling! Franco Lourens has just released his new vintages and here are his notes...
After the past year or two of stops and starts, it seemed there was a new vintage release almost every week so we have truly been spoilt for choice this year, and the quality of the wines has been exceptional. The easing of travel with the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions means we also have all the foreign tourists and the long-stay semi-residents who live in Hermanus throughout the summer so our village is bustling! Thanks to our loyal customers who have been supporting us over the years with their 'allocation orders' and do not forget that we are open every day (including Christmas Day and New Year's Day), and are looking forward to seeing everyone again next year!
This just-released Syrah is a new addition to Elim's Ghost Corner range and is also made by Cederberg's David Nieuwoudt.
TASTING NOTES BY SANDY HARPER CWM: Showing off a lighter, garnet-ruby colour, this Syrah reflects its cooler climate terroir both in colour and composition. Ripe plum and maraschino cherries on the nose with savoury black olive, herbal notes of rosemary and origanum, and a distinctive white pepper spicy edge. This Syrah - the name by which this wine identifies that it is more European in style - reflects the extreme site where this vineyard is situated at the southernmost tip of Africa. Medium-bodied, refreshing and beautifully elegant with refined tannins. Optimum Drinking Time: Four to eight years.
FOOD PAIRING: Game fish cooked over hot coals. Slow-braised oxtail or venison cooked in red wine and sherry. A charcuterie platter with salami, parma ham, tapenade and pork rillettes. An Italian minestrone soup with grated parmesan cheese. Creamy risotto with wild mushrooms and any aged, hard cheeses such as boerenkaas, mature gouda or two-year-old asiago.
There should always be an empty parking space in the corner next to our shop, but if not please feel free to stop directly in front of our shop while you are with us - this will save you time driving around looking for a parking space.
Please note that our website does not show the complete range of wine that we have in stock, so please do contact us if you are looking for something not listed online, especially those that are 'allocation' only.

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
Thank you for your support - stay safe - see you soon!
