Anel Voigt is a visual artist from Somerset West on the outskirts of Cape Town. She is a graduate of the visual arts program at the University of South Africa. A course with a strong focus on conceptual art, experimenting and using unusual materials and methods to create art. This body of work is the result of this way of thinking.
Anel created these artworks using silkworm cocoons she inherited from her parents. The beauty and elegance as well as the many other exceptional qualities of silk made it an enticing medium to use. The raw silk is prepared by boiling the cocoons in water, stretched out to create a thin, smooth layer and then dyed.
The artworks were created using thin, wet strands of dyed sulk that were shaped into images and transferred onto canvas.
Giclée is used to describe a fine art digital printing process combining pigment-based inks with high-quality archival paper to achieve prints of superior archival quality, light fastness and stability. If kept out of direct sunlight it will keep its colours for at least sixty years.
About Jenny
Jenny Boon was born in 1975 in Pretoria, South Africa. She graduated in 1997 in Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria. She lives in Pretoria, South Africa and loves to paint the city’s beautiful Jacaranda trees as well as South Africa’s indigenous trees. She paints in her studio but also loves to do plein-air painting.
"I aspire to capture the frequencies of colour and poetry in paint, to release a breath of joy, serenity and contemplation into your special space.
I spent my formative years on a farm in the then Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). The woods where I walked and picked mushrooms with my dog, cat and chick, was my classroom. I would draw and write stories based on these adventures.
At age 8 we moved to Kimberley which is home to the famous “Big Hole” in South Africa. The arid Karoo has a beauty of its own. Holidays were spent travelling to Mozambique, Durban and the South Coast where we basked in the beauty of the ocean.
My Artist Journey
After a short stint at Michaelis Art School in Cape Town, I spent a few years doing Technical Design at a drawing board before it became digitalized. It was then that I gave birth to my handsome son and a few years later a beautiful daughter who literally became my life. We were now living in the picturesque city of Cape Town with its world-renowned Table Mountain.
I qualified and went on to teach Montessori for 27 years, retiring at the end of 2018.
Over the 27-year period, I also taught extra mural art and craft classes throughout the Peninsula and up the West Coast of Southern Africa.
After 40 years in 2022, we relocated to a seaside village, an hour’s drive from Cape Town, called Pringle Bay.
Commissions and Exhibitions
I initially exhibited at Feathers in the Waterfront, at the Cape Show, Art in the Park, and other local venues. These were mostly serene watercolours in flowing washes.
I also enjoyed several contracts as a Scenic Artist for movie sets. Commissions ranged from aging a ship to marbling a city, as well as puppets and backdrops for shows.
Furthermore, I worked for a company painting stage settings for dances and weddings. In particular, a very large canvas of a rose, for the Mandela Rose Ball comes to mind."
