Following South Africa’s win at Chelsea, Grootbos Florilegium artist, Daleen Roodt, won a gold medal, “Best Botanical Artwork” and the “People’s Choice Award” at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Botanical Art and Photography Show held in the Saatchi Gallery in London.
Along with other celebrated botanical artists, Daleen‘s winning artworks will also be a part of the display at Chelsea Flowers in Stanford.
The Chelsea Flower Show is one of the world’s most prestigious and renowned horticultural events. Organised by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), it has been held annually since 1913 on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London.
The show attracts top garden designers, plant specialists, and exhibitors from around the globe, who compete for highly coveted awards and recognition. It is attended by members of the British royal family and visited by thousands of garden enthusiasts and professionals each year, making it a significant event in the horticultural calendar.
Chelsea Flowers in Stanford replicates the winning exhibit, inspired by South Africa’s Cape Floral Region, one of the six identified floristic kingdoms in the world. The region’s mountains run in a series of ranges, from Cederberg (200km north of the Cape Peninsula) along the coast for 850km to Gqeberha in the East and there are endemic species that only occur in the habitats between the mountains.
The team collaborated with botanical gardens, nurseries, and conservation projects across South Africa to gather the flora needed for their display. It includes more than 10 different protea species and over 20,000 flower stalks. The exhibit’s earthy backdrop was created using wood, clay and hay bales, allowing the vibrant flora to take centre stage.
