Building Skills & Enhancing Lives

Creative Skills Factory is a registered non-profit organisation that aims to teach children, in Stanford and Gansbaai, social and emotional skills as a foundation for life. An experienced occupational therapist runs early childhood development programmes in schools and crèches to promote school readiness. To reach their objective, Creative Skills Factory supports families, caregivers, and teachers. Moreover, Creative Skills Factory goes the extra mile by hosting after-school programmes to enhance learning and teaching in an educational and community-based setting. A team of local people in the community run Creative Skills Factory, and the organisation is proud to be affiliated with Star Search Overstrand, an annual talent event for young performing artists.

About

“Creative Skills Factory strives to sustain the non-profit organisation's growth to reach more communities in the Overberg.”

Due to an observed need, specifically the lack of early stimulation for children in high-risk areas, resulting in low skill levels, high school dropout rates, and limited access to age-appropriate play, “Creative Works” was initiated in Stanford in 2012. The programme offered extra-mural creative workshops to children aged between five and 13 years old.

These creative workshops inspired the development of a school-based programme focusing on early learning. It equipped young children in the pre-school environment with the necessary skills to enter the school environment well prepared and ready to engage when starting Grade 1.

Today, the organisation offers a range of programmes, all of which are focused on contributing to quality educational programs for all children and youth in the Overstrand.

Creative Works has grown substantially since its inception, developing and implementing programmes with high levels of community buy-in and clear evidence of impact, to become Creative Skills Factory. It was formally registered as a Non-Profit Company in 2017.

Goals

  • Seeing children thrive, engage and participate to their full potential in all aspects of life
  • Enhancing teaching and learning via educational programmes that draw from creative tools such as play, arts and crafts, music, drama and self-expression through movement

Therapy Room

Therapy Room

Creative Skills Factory has a therapy room at the Die Bron Primary School in Stanford.

The room is a safe, quiet space where children can learn and be creative under the guidance of an experienced occupational therapist. This environment is provided for them as a place where they can feel comfortable and confident to be themselves.

Occupational therapy sessions and group interventions also happen in the therapy room.

Future Initiatives

Future Initiatives

“If the kids can’t get to Creative Skills Factory, Creative Skills Factory will go to the children!”

Many children miss out on Creative Skills Factory’s programmes because they lack safe transportation or live too far away. With this in mind, the organisation came up with the brilliant idea of using a “Play Bus” to include more children.

Play Bus

The Play Bus would be a mini-bus with books, educational games, toys, and art materials that would visit schools and crèches in urban and semi-urban areas with the following incentives:

  • To Educate the Youth
  • To Facilitate Childhood Development and Skills Development
  • To Enrich Children’s Lives
  • To Involve Parents and Other Community Members in Active Learning

For the bus to get on the road it needs funding, volunteers and support from:

  • Educators
  • Therapists
  • Artists
  • Musicians
  • Locals
Volunteer

Volunteer

Creative Skills Factory needs volunteers with experience in art, music, crafting, puppeteering, or movement therapy.

If you are passionate about working with children and want to make a meaningful impact, please contact Regina Broenner to schedule an appointment.
