Happy May Month Everyone!
When looking back, April stands for us as a pillar of duality with its extreme highs and lows - felt in nearly every day, even in a split second. We all know that this is life, yet when the happenings take place and we are truly shown its power, we are left speechless, humbled, and truly alive.
This month we can celebrate our greatest fundraiser yet in the history of Panthera Africa - we have far surpassed our target of R150,000, and the donations are still coming in as people are still buying the last vouchers. The crowd gathered at Stardust were on fire, gifted with outstanding performances, food, and wine. One moment will forever be remembered - we stood absolutely in trance as we witnessed our grand auction item of a signed Nelson Mandela photo go on a bidding battle between two powerful ladies, and ended at an incredible R81,000! The energy in the room was electric and I am sure was felt at the sanctuary itself. Thank you to each and every one of you that attended, that bought prizes, that shared your love and joy, that made this an unforgettable evening for us all. Next year we are turning 10 years - let's see what we can do together then.
The duality of life kicked us hard to the ground the next morning as we left Cape Town early with vets and assistants to do a full examination of our lion king Achilles. We were in absolute shock when we learned that our brave strong protector had developed cancer in his jaw and there was nothing we could do for him but to send him to spirit. The grief and sadness are still deeply felt amongst the whole two and four-legged pride, and the vacuum of his presence is enormous. His rumbling roars across our lands will always be missed, even though the power of his strength is felt within us all.
On the light side, we tallied up the numbers of tourists to date, and we are nearly already at 50% of last year's numbers, which again brings great joy, hope, and relief in our hearts that we are back on track for a prosperous year where we again serve our best to accomplish our mission of caring for our pride, changing the industry by educating the public, and opening hearts and minds to the true beauty of life.
Thank you all for walking side by side with us - together we make a difference far beyond our wildest dreams.
With love and gratitude,
Catherine and Lizaene

In Loving Memory of Achilles
It was with profound sadness that we announced the passing of our brave lion, Achilles, who left us for the heavens on April 26, 2024. Known for his immense strength and gentle heart, Achilles was a beacon of courage and kindness within our sanctuary.
The week prior, during a routine dental check, what was thought to be a minor issue turned into a heart-wrenching discovery. Achilles was found to have an aggressive form of cancer that had significantly spread throughout his jaw. Faced with the devastating prognosis that only a short time remained, filled with unavoidable pain, we made the compassionate decision to let him go peacefully, surrounded by those who loved him deeply.
Achilles's roar, once a powerful echo across our sanctuary, will now resonate in the hush of our memories. His spirit, undeniably strong and noble, will continue to inspire us and live on in the sanctuary he called home. As we promise to watch over his brother Jubatus, providing all the love and support he needs, we remember Achilles not just as a lion, but as a true king among us.
In honour of Achilles's memory, and to cover the extensive costs incurred from specialist care during his final procedure, we humbly ask for your support. Any donation towards the over R25,000 spent on his veterinary care will help us immensely and ensure that our residents continue to receive the highest standard of care in their times of need.
Rest in peace, Achilles 3 Aug 2009 - 26 April 2024.

Happy Birthday Mahaba
As we celebrated another wonderful year with Mahaba, we are reminded of the incredible journey that brought him to us. Originally found navigating the rooftops of Roselare, his early adventures in an urban environment were far from the natural life he deserved. After being rescued and spending a brief time at Natuurhulpcentrum, Mahaba was lovingly relocated to our sanctuary in 2022 by the Born Free Foundation, alongside his companions Kamogelo, Lekanya, and Balozi.
Today, Mahaba thrives in the Born Free Rescue Section at Panthera Africa, surrounded by the beauty of natural fauna and flora. His days are filled with the joys of a safe, natural habitat, where he can explore, play, and relax in peace.

Happy Birthday Amy
On April 4th, our gorgeous caracal Amy celebrated her 14th birthday, marking yet another year of grace and wisdom at Panthera Africa. Rescued as a young kitten after being abandoned and left dehydrated by her mother, Amy has grown into a dignified and wise "lady" caracal. Although she tends to keep to herself, her playful spirit comes alive with her favourite toys and a splash of water.
As Amy enjoyed her special day surrounded by the love and care of our sanctuary, we invite you to share in the celebration. This year, as a special birthday gift, consider becoming Amy’s Guardian. By doing so, you’ll not only honour Amy's resilience and beauty but also support her ongoing care and well-being.
Become a Guardian for Amy today and help make her birthday truly memorable!
