Fire Season is Here!

The Overstrand Municipality Fire Department has been preparing for what is known in the Overstrand as the Fire Season.

Be Prepared

Officially starting on November 1, no one knows what the fire season will bring but being as prepared as possible is advised.

Clear High-risk Materials from Properties

In light of the safety requirements set out in Section 34 of the Community Fire Safety By-Law, all property owners must be aware of their responsibility to prevent an accumulation of combustible material, including vegetative matter, on their premises.

The municipality encourages owners of undeveloped, overgrown plots of land to take steps to help reduce fire hazards. By clearing land it minimises the risk of ignition and the spread of fires to adjacent residences and fields.

Follow Precautions

By taking the following fire safety precautions on your property you could help prevent runaway and life-threatening fires:

1. Clear overhanging vegetation from your driveway so that it is wide enough to accommodate a fire engine.

2. Cut back vegetation and remove debris around your home.

3. Make sure your roof and gutters are clean.

5. Remove or control invasive alien vegetation, such as Port Jacksons.

6. Do not store flammable materials such as gas cylinders under decks and verandas, pack them away in a safe place.

Braai Responsibly

Just about everyone loves braaiing and during the hot summer months, many people migrate to outside braai areas to light a fire and soak up the sun.

By braaing sensibly, you can help prevent an inferno so be aware of the following fire-wise precautions:

1. Always set your braai up on a flat, smooth surface, far from fences, trees, overhanging plants or wood.

2. Keep all flammable objects away from the braai, especially when having a braai outdoors. The wind can change direction and blow embers in a second.

3. Never move or leave a lit braai unattended.

4. Don’t bury glowing coals in the sand. They may seem as if they are “out” but are most probably still glowing in the centre and could flare up. Always douse coals with water to be sure they are extinguished.

5. Never scoop ashes straight from the braai into a dustbin or wheelie bin. If coals are even slightly hot, they will melt the plastic in an instant and cause a major fire.

Always Be Aware

Always be aware of your surroundings. Take in the beauty of the landscape often so that you are first to spot tell-tale whisps of smoke.

If you see smoke or a fire that needs attention contact:
