Exploring the Overberg: South Africa’s Coas...
Stretching from the dramatic peaks of the Kogelberg to the windswept shores of Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
If you are a pet owner who would rather travel without a change of clothing than spend a night without the family pet, you might consider a pet-friendly holiday destination. While there are many self-catering homes, guesthouses and camping resorts that welcome non-human guests, consideration should always be shown to the surroundings, businesses and most of all the other visitors that you and your animal’s paths will cross.
1. Double-check that your accommodation is pet-friendly and confirm this in advance.
2. Pay the fee or deposit that many pet-friendly establishments ask, please don’t argue about it, rather be grateful they allow this service.
3. Wash and treat your pet for fleas before your holiday to avoid causing discomfort for other travellers.
4. Bring blankets from home to cover furniture to protect beds and couches.
5. Keep your animal restrained at all times when out in public, your feelings about animals aren’t necessarily those of the other guests.
6. Make sure any restaurant you will be visiting allows pets, don’t assume and don’t get upset if you don’t get your way.
7. Avoid leaving your pet locked up in your room or holiday property if you will be gone for long periods. They would be better off at home in that case.
8. Let your pet out last thing at night and first thing in the morning to avoid accidents inside.
9. Pick up after your pet if it has an oopsie when you go for a walk.
10. Leave your pet with a professional pet sitter, kennel or family member if they don’t enjoy travel or react negatively with strangers.
