Bot River Estuary Geological Excursion

The Bot River Estuary and surrounds half-day Geology Excursion starts at the Kleinmond Main Beach/Bot River outlet and ends in Bot River Village. It will be led by Jean Malan and Mike De Wit.

The Excursion Registration cost is R100.00 to cover production of the excellent, user-friendly illustrated Geoguide Booklet compiled by Jean Malan and Mike DeWit. Members, Non-members, Non-Geologists, Families, Students and Learners are most welcome.

For those who so wish, there is the option of lunch at Beaumont Wine Farm. Please contact this venue and make a table reservation, preferably 24 hours in advance, if you wish to round off the Excursion with a pleasant lunch at this excellent venue.

GeoExcursion Summary

The half-day excursion covers the Bot River-Kleinmond Estuary and surrounding features, and hinterland geology, including Table Mountain Sandstones (TMS), Bokkeveld Shales, Grahamstown Formation silcretes, recent Bot River alluvial gravels, coastal dunes of the Strandveld Formation, and Recent/modern sedimentation features   There will be opportunities to see and discuss high-level marine and fluvial terraces, the African Land-Surface, effects of the dramatic September 2023 floods, the recent record-breaking July rainfall, sediment influx and erosion of the Botrivier-Kleinmond Estuary - a result of climate change ..… or not?
