Sakkie and Saartjie Cottages
There are more to the cottages, Sakkie and Saartjie than you could ever imagine!
Once upon a time three tiny houses were built using raw brick and lime. As tradition dictated, their poplar roof rafters were covered with thatching reed from the region.
During their life span of more than 200 years, the roofs were replaced several times. Mostly things turned out fine. Until the day, some decades back, that the walls of seamstress Hannie's cottage gave way to the weight of the new roof. To this day, the free standing oven with chimney is the silent witness of the sad fate of Hannie's cottage.
The neighbouring cottages, now lovingly named Sakkie and Saartjie, were "crowned" with new thatch roofs early in 2019. What a blessing it is to have a "roof over one's head"!
