A running start for Cancer Awareness Month in Swellendam

Pink was the predominant colour in Swellendam on Thursday evening October 7th when the 2021 Cancer Awareness month fundraiser kicked off with the first of four CANSA “Shades of Pink” Cancer Awareness Walks/ Runs. The 4.5 km that was organised by the staff of the Swellendam based Drostdy Museum Friends started and ended at the Drostdy Museum. CANSA strives to raise awareness of cancers affecting women and encourages women to be aware of symptoms, changes in their bodies and to go for cancer screening, in order to detect cancer early. This year around, awareness is being raised of the top 5 cancers affecting women: breast, cervical, colorectal, uterine and lung cancer. Of these five, breast and cervical cancer affect women most. CANSA “Shades of Pink” walks/runs initiative are held across the country and the initiative is regarded as “a fun and visible way to bring awareness”. Old and young joined in the walk/run that was described as an “emotional dedicated event but also a lot of fun.” The initiative is repeated four times in the course of the month of October with follow up runs/walks earmarked to take place on October 14th, October 21st and 28th October.
