Marine Evening - Southern Right Whales

Marine Evening - Southern Right Whales

Dyer Island Conservation Trust

At the Dyer Island Conservation Trust we conduct both original research and conservation studies as well as partnering with and supporting other research organisations. One such organisation is the Mammal Research Institute Whale Unit of the University of Pretoria, with whom we have had a relationship for the past 17 years! So it was with great pride that we invited the newly-appointed Research Manager of the Whale Unit, Dr Els Vermeulen to address us at our final Marine Evening of 2017.

Her presentation was entitled "Southern Right Whales - From whaling to research, from local to global" and she shared with us some interesting facts about this species, the history of and current information on the International Whaling Commission, as well as hot-off-the press details of the latest annual aerial surveys for southern right whales in all the breeding grounds in the southern hemisphere.
