Elim Home Annual Report 2023/2024
Elim Home remains committed to providing exceptional care for individuals with severe intellectual and physical disabilities.
The biggest misconception outside the Moravian community about Elim Home is the fact that it is not commonly known as a facility for disabled children and one assumes it is an old age home. This concept is strengthened by the misleading second part of the name 'Home' which normally is associated with the aged.
Founded in 1963 by the Moravian Church, Elim Home is one of only a few non-profit institutions that service the profoundly disabled children of the Western Cape. Children from as far as George in the East, Upington, and Piketberg in the West find a loving home in Elim. The home provides 24-hour care with 54 staff for the 50 full-time residents with a holistic approach and it includes basic health care and day-to-day care and a lot of TLC.
Elim Home also has outreach programs in Gansbaai and Bredasdorp. The day-cares services 31 disabled children and provided a safe environment for learning and caring for the children, staff component of 7. Elim Home is a non-profit organisation and depends mostly on donations and fundraising to make ends meet. Partnerships is also a crucial part of the sustainability of the home and is governed by a board and managed by a director and a management team.
It is always important to know where you came from and the aim of this project is not only to honour the legacy of those who came before us but to lay the bricks on the path for future generations. As custodians, we have a duty not only to preserve the legacy but to learn from it and to build and strengthen our part of the legacy.
We have a special board in our assembly hall and on this board, we will place "bricks" with names and messages from donors. Each size "brick" has a different monetary value and one stands free to support how they see fit.
To be associated with Elim Home is a privilege and honour, but with that comes a responsibility. During the Covid 19 pandemic, the value of good friends and good communication plays a huge role in the survival of Elim Home and yes it was difficult to foresee the future and to navigate the home through the troubled times. But with sound financial governing, policies and planning we overcame the challenges. The funds from the Legacy Project will be utilised within these parameters. Partially to strengthen our relief fund, partially to maintain day-to-day operations and partially to help with projects like the planned solar-power project.
We thank you for your support and contribution to this project.
