Winter Adventures with Fatbike Tours
Winter brought incredible opportunities to spot fresh animal tracks!
Gansbaai is famed for it’s large population of Great White Sharks and booming Shark Cage Diving industry. We are still seeing huge numbers of people shuttle in and out of the town daily that are completely unaware of how beautiful this town is and what is on offer. Fortunately thanks to Xplorio a general platform is available to the public to easily browse through the options for accommodation, restaurants, activities and businesses. Most people these days research on the internet before coming to an area and when planning their holiday and this is the perfect platform to do this.
We are now in the position of being able to offer a network of options for people to choose to keep them busy for a few days in the area. With Gansbaai tourism bureau adopting a new slogan ‘The Natural Adventure Destination’ this is the perfect time us to create ways to entice and keep people in the area. We have the following stunning activities on offer:
The bikes are lightweight (16kg) and have wide soft tyres with very low pressure so to allow for a wide shallow tread on the sand. The wide tread prevents the tyres from sinking into the sand and allows the rider to easily ride on soft sand. The impact on the sand is minimal and when on the beach the ride is on the low water mark so there is no impact at all. We ride on the low water mark and well away from the high water line where the African Oyster catchers nest in season. On the Dunes we follow the horse trail down to the Dunes and then take a route on the main part of the Dunes away from any precious vegetation supporting the Dunes. I have also found that our tracks are minimal on the Dunes and after a day or two all signs of the trail are gone. I have mapped out a route on the Dunes and beach to take clients and these routes cause no harm to the area and give people the opportunity to take in this amazing environment in a healthy and environmental friendly way.
I have been enjoying mountain biking for some time and preferred staying clear of the roads and cars so spent much time exploring the rocky coastline of De Kelders and along Die Plaat. In December a new invention arrived in South Africa and I was fortunate enough to get my hands on one of first Fatbikes in the Western Cape. This gave me a new lease of life and I was able to explore places I would previously never consider on a mountain bike. I bought the bike to keep fit but after seeing the amazing landscapes I was exploring I knew I had to show this to others. We live in the most beautiful place in South Africa and we must embrace this and show the world how special we are and how lucky we are to live here in Gansbaai. Most people in Gansbaai (like me) know of the sand dunes but have never been up there and perhaps 98% of tourists just see the dunes from far with just a glance. Now I am able with these amazing bikes to show people and take them in between the Dunes and along the beach.
There are also huge benefits with our tours as we are able to educate people about the coastline and dunes whilst showing them the stunning wildlife such as Black Oyster Catchers, Cormorants, Seals and in Whale Season seeing Whales from the dunes and beach as we ride. We will be monitoring the health of the bay with the following
Black Oyster Catcher count and monitor the areas above the high water mark for evidence of human disturbance in nesting season
We are offering 5 stunning tours covering all levels of riders. The most fun is the Sand Dunes tour and this is suitable for all levels from basic riders to advanced mountain bikers (average general fitness only required). For the fit rider we also offer our stunning tour from De Kelders to Grotto Beach riding along the low water mark by the surf all of the way across the bay. Our ultimate tour the EPIC includes our stunning Sand Dune tour then onto the beach from De Kelders to Hermanus. When at Sopiesklip (The rock that a German man lived in, in the 80’s) if you are up to it we will head inland and finish off riding up the edge of the Kleinriver lagoon taking in the stunning wildlife such as the 2 resident massive Fish Eagles and dozens of Flamingos.
Gansbaai urges you to book a couple of nights at least as there is so much to offer now in this beautiful town not only the Fatbike Tours in the Natural Adventure Destination.
Dave Caravias invites you to join him on a scenic coastal adventure in De Kelders, Gansbaai, with Fatbike Tours. Fatbikes are easy to ride and the super wide 4.7-inch tires, are specially designed to glide over the sand. Be prepared to have the time of your life with the awesome sensation of riding ...
