A Belgian couple, Chris Vleugels and his wife, Tessa, visited Gansbaai for a second time on Friday, 1 November 2024. “When Chris contacted me earlier this year to say they were going to visit us again, his first question was what were the projects in circulation in Masakhane,” said Glenda Kitley of White Shark Protects. “I immediately thought of the Masakhane Swop Shop and fully informed him about its purpose and functioning and he was excited to donate funds for it.”
Glenda also arranged a visit to iMed Africa for the couple. There they were informed in detail by Shereen van der Merwe about the enormous service in the form of training they provide to adults and children. Chris and Tessa were highly impressed with iMed's variety of training and activities and many questions were asked.
From there, the group headed to the Swop Shop, which was the original purpose of the couple's visit. Glenda and Jessica decided in advance to use Chris's funds for the purchase of products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, underarm spreads and soaps with the aim of educating visitors to the Swop Shop on the importance of hygiene in self-care.
Monica, who runs the Swop Shop on behalf of Jessica from White Shark Projects, received the products bought for the Swop Shop. Before leaving, Chris and Tessa were entertained by Didamasoka and his group of dancers -a performance which was really enjoyed by Chris and Tessa.
