Ikamva's positive impact on communities

Ikamva Youth Development & Computer Centre in Blompark is the beneficiary of the Poegie-ride to Henties Bay and back on Scooters by five brave men (see article elsewhere in this edition). Here is a bit of background on the activities and operations of Ikamva.

“Ikamva could impact positively on our communities, by empowering them with good services which will assist them to rise above their circumstances and to contribute to the economy of South Africa,” said Jolande Sauls, Manager: Ikamva. “We envisaged expanding our program to reach more youth, children and patients in the Stanford and Gansbaai area, Baardskeerdersbos, Pearly Beach and Buffeljagsbaai.” As an organisation, they face specific challenges in terms of reaching this goal, such as their own Transport, Running Costs of the Organisation, Salaries, Nutritional Support, Support and Maintenance. In addition to this, the organisation has identified a piece of land (plot) next to the current ECD centre and a plot next to the rugby field, which they wish to purchase to expand on the services already provided by the ECD centre.

Motivation for various projects

Blompark, which forms part of the greater Gansbaai area, is a disadvantaged community facing many challenges, such as youth unemployment, substance abuse (both children and adults), access to healthcare, early childhood development facilities, etc. For the past 19 years, Ikamva has committed itself to addressing these challenges. Within this organisation, four different projects are being managed under the supervision of Jolande.
