The Beer Garden at Buns and Bases

The Beer Garden at 12 Franken Street, Gansbaai is the perfect place to enjoy an ice-cold beverage and some delicious food while the little one’s play in the large playground.

On Saturday the restaurant held an Octoberfest kid’s-day-out event that was a smash hit with parents in the area. The children where spoilt with face painting, soft serve ice cream and an enormous jumping castle while parents enjoyed freshly made woodfired oven pizzas, local beers and wines.

The owners Katie and Mauro, along with 4-year son Zaccy, saw an opportunity to turn the old fishermans’ cottage into a family-friendly restaurant serving great food. “As parents ourselves we want to create a space where other parents can feel comfortable taking their children to play while enjoying a warm, professional service, freshly made food and drinks”.

Mauro was born in Mozambique and grew up in Portugal. That experience can be seen on the menu that includes old Portuguese classics like a spicy prawn starter, grilled chorizo, and a delicious Portuguesa pizza.

He also helped start the very successful Pizza Perfect restaurant franchise back in 2003.

Katie is from the Eastern Cape but spent many wonderful holidays in their family home in De Kelders. A fully trained actress and qualified Industrial Psychologist, she confesses to having a very soft spot for this area.

The couple met in 2008 while working in Cape Town and moved to Dubai shortly after where they worked as flight attendant Team Managers for Emirates Airlines. With the outbreak of Covid-19, they decided it was time to move back to South Africa.

Other highlights on the menu include a variety of steaks, seafood starters and curries.

“We are 100% committed to making use of fresh local products. All our wines will be sourced from the Agulhas triangle, our beers are all local and we have crafted a Gansbaai mezze platter that is sourced from local delis and showcases the amazing cheeses, spreads, and cold cuts from this area,” Mauro stated.

This is bound to delight visitors to our town.

At night, the lights go down, soft music plays in the background and clean tasteful décor turns the Beer Garden cottage into the perfect indoor venue where adults can enjoy a late evening out.

The Beer Garden for October is open from 11:00am to 21:00pm on weekends and from 17:00pm to 21:00pm Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesday.
