These signs will divert the traffic to the arrowed streets in Hermanus during the resurfacing and closure of Main Road between Harbour Road and Marine Drive from 15 January to the end of February. In addition, electronic signs before entering Hermanus on the R43 from Onrus and at the first traffic circle after entering Hermanus on the R43 from Stanford, will inform traffic of the closure with suggested alternative routes.
All is on track for the rehabilitation of Main Road between Harbour Road and Marine Drive in Hermanus. That section of the Main Road (both lanes) will be closed for traffic from Wednesday 15 January 2014 until the expected completion time of the project at the end of February. Main Road is a provincial road and the Overstrand Municipality is undertaking this essential maintenance project for the Western Cape Provincial Roads Department. Mike Bartman, Deputy Director: Operational Services of the Overstrand Municipality says that everything possible is being done to minimise disruptions to business operations, traffic and pedestrian flows as well as access points to the few residential properties in Main Road.
“Traffic will receive early warnings at both the entrances to the town about the diversions and all alternative routes will be sign-posted throughout the town. The sidewalks on both sides of Main Road will be open for pedestrians and pedestrians will be able to cross safely at designated and wheelchair friendly places. Traffic point duty will be provided when required and special arrangements for deliveries off Main Road will be made.
“Representatives of the municipality, the consul-tants and contractors, the traffic department and the business sector serve on a liaison committee which co-ordinates the various interim arrangements and the communication around the project. We will meet weekly for the duration of the project and will keep the public informed of developments”, he added.
While the rehabilitation work will start on the closed Main Road on 15 January, the contractors will be busy in Main Road from early in January with preparatory work. They will also be doing assessments of individual business premises with the respective shop owners in Main Road to catalogue existing constructional flaws, cracks, etc. before the rehabilitation project commences.
