After a few days of not going out at sea due to bad weather conditions, we are back and ready for what the day will bring.
Join us for an engaging Marine Evening focused on the critical issue of ocean plastic waste, with Guest Speaker Mark Dixon. Founder of the Strandloper Project, Mark initiated cleanup efforts at Gericke’s Point, a popular fishing spot on the Garden Route, and has since led five coastal expeditions, hiking nearly 1,000 km to survey and document plastic waste and washed-up fishing gear. With expertise in marine ecology and a strong belief in citizen science, Mark's work plays a vital role in community-driven marine conservation.
Reviewing five years of expedition hikes between Hermanus and Cape Recife provides insights into the regional variations of ocean plastic waste and washed-up fishing debris. Using this data can assist local communities in planning and implementing interventions at community and municipal level to mitigate the loss of plastic into the ocean through municipal infrastructure and rivers.
We look forward to seeing you there.
