The Overberg Geoscientists Group (OGG) invites members and interested participants to join a geological field excursion exploring the Onrus River and Hemel and Aarde Valley on Saturday, 6 June 2026.
Led by John Blaine and John Bristow, this full-day outing will examine the geological history of the Onrus River system and the surrounding valley. Although the river is relatively short (about 18 km) and currently has low water flow due to agricultural and domestic use, the landscape reveals evidence of a much more dynamic geological past. The excursion will explore these features and discuss how past processes shaped the valley we see today.
• Meeting point: Wine Village parking area (corner of R43 and R320)
• Time: Meet 08:00 for 08:30 departure
• Finish: Approximately 16:00
• Lunch: Bring your own picnic and refreshments
This is a great opportunity to learn about the regional geology of the Overberg while exploring one of the area's most interesting river systems.
