Sandberg Fynbos Reserve is located on the R43 between Baardskeerdersbos and Elim, about thirty minutes from Gansbaai. The reserve is a 700-hectare property located in the heart of the Cape’s floristic region and is home to many bird species including the rare Hottentot buttonquail. Embark on a guided fynbos safari with a knowledgeable guide who has an extensive background in botany and fynbos ecology. Alternatively, opt for a self-drive safari and explore the countryside at your leisure. Sandberg Fynbos Reserve also has three signposted hiking and MTB trails that wind their way through the reserve and the surrounding area. Furthermore, Sandberg Fynbos Reserve offers an annual natural building course and the option to rent a rustic two-bedroom cottage that can accommodate four guests.

Your hosts at Sandberg Fynbos Reserve are Gerhard van Deventer and Professor William Stafford.

Professor William Stafford

William Stafford is a life scientist with over twenty years of research and development experience in the diverse fields of biochemistry, microbial ecology, systems biology, bioenergy, permaculture, holistic resource management, industrial ecology and sustainability science. He is also an extraordinary associate professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University. 

Gerhard van Deventer

Gerhard van Deventer has worked closely with fynbos landscape conservation organisations and has an extensive background in botany, fynbos ecology and guiding.

Sandberg Fynbos Reserve offers educational guided fynbos safaris where you will be introduced to rare and unique fynbos species. 

  • Cost: R750 (for the vehicle and a maximum of 7 passengers)
  • Duration: Two hours 
  • Route: Includes three stops (or more)

Please note that the guided fynbos safaris are by appointment only.

Sandberg Fynbos Reserve is proud to be the home of the rare Hottentot buttonquail (Turnix hottentottus) as well as a myriad of other bird species. 

Regular guided birding tours are offered by guest guides who are specialists in their field.

Pilgrim’s Trail
  • Total Length - 10,5km (Between Sandberg Fynbos Reserve and Elim in either direction)

Button Quail Trail
  • Total Length - 7km - (on Sandberg Fynbos Reserve)
  • Fitness Level - Fair to Moderate
Sunset Trail 
  • Total Length - 5km (on Sandberg Fynbos Reserve)

Sandberg Fynbos Reserve has two self-drive safari routes.

  • Time: 2-hours per route
  • Vehicle Requirements: High-clearance (not necessarily 4x4)
  • Amenities: Signposted routes and demarked picnic sites

Sandberg Fynbos Reserve hosts an annual natural building course which is held by The Natural Building Collective. 

The Natural Building Collective

The project is dedicated to educating people about the potential of sustainable building and the course focusses on restorations and new builds using natural building materials that include cob, adobe brick, rammed earth, straw bale, tyres, sandbags and recycled materials.

Vleiroos Cottage is a rustic two-bedroom self-catering hideaway on Sandberg Fynbos Reserve.

The cottage is set in lush natural surroundings and has a covered patio with a relaxed seating and braai area. There is a farm-style kitchen and lounge area with a large indoor fireplace.

The first bedroom has a double bed and the second bedroom has two single beds. Both rooms share a bathroom with a bath, basin and toilet. There is an outdoor shower.
