It's that time of the year again when lovers of classical music and South Africa's established and emerging musicians follow the sounds of classical notes to the charming villages of Greyton and Genadendal in the Overberg to be part of a magical experience that comes around only once a year.
The ethos of this intimate and unpretentious festival is to inspire and connect people of all ages through extraordinary classical music performances, community engagement and music education. The Greyton Genadendal Classics for All festival not only brings the crème de la Crème of South Africa's classical music talents to our villages but also serves as a significant platform for the development of young up and coming artists.
We don't believe in "Bigger and Better" - better, yes! We strive every year to improve on the previous years, to bring a bouquet of various genres, all of a classical nature, to satisfy every taste. But bigger? No! We want to maintain the small village atmosphere that has made this festival so popular - a festival where visitors, locals and artists can meet in the streets, in the various eateries and other shops, at the venues, and so rekindle friendships and make new ones.
My special thanks go to loyal and new sponsors and donors who help us sustain a festival that has positioned itself as the Overberg's signature classical music festival and an important fixture on the Western Cape Cultural Calendar. Our heartfelt thanks also go to our main sponsor, the Rupert Foundation, who has been supporting Classics for All over the past few years. And lastly, I would like to thank the festival committee for their hard work and dedication.
Now kick back and enjoy three days full of dazzling performances in different settings, with a wide range of repertoire, including some beloved and some lekker known yet extraordinary works.
Experience the beauty of both villages and the warmth and friendliness of the people who live here. Do some wine and beer tasting, browse the art galleries, visit the historic Genadendal Church Square, and indulge in the delicious country fare on offer at our restaurants and street cafes, some of which will be offering classical busking, thus adding to the festive atmosphere in the village.
I truly believe that the 2019 Greyton Genadendal Classics for All festival will exceed all expectations.
