Exploring the Overberg: South Africa’s Coas...

The sooner we look at our rubbish as a valuable resource that can be reused, recycled, and repurposed instead of something that is simply disposable, the better.
There is nothing worse than seeing our streets and parks adorned with discarded plastic bags and fast-food containers. However unsightly it is most of us only have a good old moan about it because, at the end of the day, it is not our problem. Somebody gets paid clean it up, right?
A new mindset is needed when we dispose of our ‘rubbish’. We should be aware of what happens to our black bags after we put them out on the pavement for collection.
Doing this will grow an understanding of how to manage the things we throw away each day.
In addition to the environmental benefits of recycling, there are also economic benefits. Recycling and repurposing waste can create jobs and generate income for individuals and communities. For example, recycling facilities need workers to sort and process materials, and businesses can create new products from recycled materials.
Moreover, reusing and repurposing waste can also save money in the long run. Landfills are expensive to build and maintain, and the costs are often passed on to taxpayers. By reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfills, we can reduce the need for new landfill construction and potentially lower the costs of waste management.
Another aspect of rethinking rubbish is reducing the amount of waste we produce in the first place. This can be done through practices like reducing single-use items, composting organic waste, and repairing or repurposing items instead of throwing them away.
Overall, rethinking rubbish is about shifting our disposable mindsets to ones grounded in resourcefulness. By valuing our waste as a potential recyclable resource, we can create a more sustainable and equitable future for ourselves and future generations.
