Hermanus Whale Festival 2015

The Hermanus Whale Festival is the annual event that celebrates the Southern Right Whales that frequent Walker Bay from July to December. Boasting some of the best land-based whale watching in the world and the renowned whale crier, it no wonder the festival has become so popular and been running for more than 20 years. Although the whales have the spotlight, there are countless other festivities to entertain the many visitors that come to the coastal town for the event.

The only enviro-arts festival in South Africa, the Hermanus Whale Festival aims to entertain and educate. It is the perfect weekend away to enjoy the majestic animals and learn how they have survived their original plight as well as celebrate local artists, delicious food, entertainment, crafts and activities.

Ideal for families but also just a great social gathering, it is a must for anyone in the area and many attending are enthusiastic return visitors. There is usually a Two Oceans Wine Food and Music Marquee where some of the top local talent perform while those with an ear for good tunes can simultaneously devour equally good food and wine. Usually there are approximately 30 artists performing over the five day festival and it serves as an enticing festivity in between learning about the ocean and its precious life at the Marine Endangered Species Marquee.

For those looking to get their heart pumping there are several adventure activities. Usually there is an open water swim, a night run, an MTB challenge and a trail run. Pick your adventure to show your support for the gentle giants of the ocean and to really join the spirit of the festival. There are many other shows such as the Whale of a Waggle walk, Whales ‘n Wheels Car Show, Flower Show, Bowls Tournament to mention a few.

Between all the fun festival goers will undoubtedly build up an appetite. There are many restaurants in Hermanus from seaside dining to cosy local favourites that serve a mouth-watering cuisine that can have both traditional and international influence. You also never need to be far from the festivities as there are plenty of restaurants that line the Waterfront and Village Square.

Make sure you don’t miss out on the Whale Festivals to come as it promises to be an exciting weekend, and the best part is that it is all in name of a good cause. Have a whale of a time at the five-day extravaganza!
