Exploring the Overberg: South Africa’s Coas...
Stretching from the dramatic peaks of the Kogelberg to the windswept shores of Walker Bay Nature Reserve.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the human race has made ground-breaking achievements and technology has advanced in leaps-and-bounds. The last few decades have been a fast-paced rollercoaster ride packed with progress. We live in an age where self-driving cars are being tested on our roads and the chance to travel on a passenger spacecraft is a not too distant reality. These advancements are celebrated and we are enjoying more conveniences than ever before. However, as a society, we do not seem to be any happier - is it possible the way we have done things has come at a significant cost?
From many perspectives our modern age could be characterised as a throw-away society, fuelled by consumerism, materialism and instant gratification. Sadly, this has had numerous negative impacts on our beautiful planet's environment, caused socio-economic inequality, increased health problems, led to the breakdown of communities and possibly even weakened family structures.
The effects of the current status quo are serious and a global pandemic has intensified the impact on our already brittle social and economic systems. It would be wise to use this opportunity to reflect, be critical, and most importantly, be brave as we ask ourselves tough questions. "What do we value and how are we measuring progress? What will the repercussions be on communities and ourselves if we continue on this path of non-stop progress?” We only need to look at nature, societies and global inequality to understand that this way of being has not been serving us well.
The true cost of the current status quo can be felt in our homes, our livelihoods, and our communities. Community represents more than a geographically located group of people sharing common infrastructure, it is a place of safety and part of our identity. Community is home, and home is where the heart is.
To change the current status quo and truly impact what matters to us, we need to shift our priorities towards our communities, our homes and the environment. It's time to adopt new measures of progress that are centred around human well-being, relationships and sustainability. Through collective action, we can inspire each other to serve our communities for mutual benefit. This reawakened perspective could lead us to create inclusive, harmonious societies that set a strong foundation for sustainable progress for generations to come.
The concept of Xplorio was awakened through this realisation and catalysed out of the belief in the #PowerOfCommunity. Xplorio aims to inspire and empower communities to take collective action and move toward building progressive societies. We see a world where we realign our compass towards a future that is driven by a shared sense of responsibility toward each other and our surroundings. One that is filled with meaningful progress that is sustainable and equitable for all life.
Let’s not lose sight of the fact that humans are gifted with consciousness and this consciousness gives us the power of choice. We need to remind ourselves and each other that we are in control of our communities and we are in a position to redefine and shape our future.
Xplorio encourages you to make one small change today - a change that works towards empowering your community in the right direction. #PowerOfCommunity - your community needs you at this time.
Sincerely,
The Xplorio Team
