The Dyer Island Conservation Trust team together with CapeNature are hard at work rescuing orphaned penguins on Dyer Island.
Dyer Island, just off Gansbaai’s coastline, has been devastated by an outbreak of Avian influenza (bird flu). Over 13,000 birds have died on the island since the outbreak started. Home to 1,000+ breeding pairs, many of the deceased adult birds have left chicks that are too young and defenceless to fend for themselves.
The African Seabird Sanctuary is working around the clock to deal with the large influx of orphaned African penguin chicks.
