Welcome to the first Gansbaai Food & Wine Festival!
Gansbaai is steeped in a rich cultural history that dates back over a hundred years. These traditions and cultures shine through in the warm hospitality that can be felt within the close-knit community, many of whom work in the fishing, farming and hospitality industry.
After a hard day at work, sharing good food and wine has always been a given, whether around the family dinner table or at one of the restaurants in the area. As a result, the Strandveld has prowess as a seriously great food destination.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has noted that every aspect of food, from a specific way a certain dish is prepared to the festivals and rituals related to mealtimes, are an integral part of the history of the region, a part that forms the very heart of a community.
In recognition of this, UNESCO announced in 2019 that the Overstrand had been designated as Africa’s first Gastronomy Creative City.
This well-deserved accolade includes the Strandveld area that stretches between Gansbaai, Bredasdorp.and Cape Agulhas, and acknowledges the many fishermen, farmers, restaurateurs, farm stalls, artisanal bakers, winemakers, beer brewers, distillers, coffee roasters and local “tannies-and-ooms” who continue to share their age-old secret family recipes. The award also recognises those dedicated foodies who pick the fruit, stir the pots and serve clients with their friendly Strandveld smiles!
To pay homage to the UNESCO award and to celebrate the Strandveld’s abundance, Gansbaai Tourism rebranded the existing Funky Fynbos Festival (established in 2014), as the Gansbaai Food & Wine Festival. Due to lockdown restrictions, the new festival was postponed in 2020 and a date was set for September 2021.
So, be sure to arrive hungry for a down-to-earth Strandveld experience that will satisfy not only your stomach but your desire for more authentic travel.
