All business owners in Overstrand, including house shop (spaza shop) owners, must comply with legal requirements for registration and ownership. This includes the Businesses Act 71 of 1971, municipal by-laws, and the Immigration Act 2002, administered by the Department of Home Affairs.

Registration alone does not permit trading. To obtain a trading license, including for food handling, compliance with health regulations from the district municipality and municipal regulations is required.

What you need to do:

Complete the application form with all supporting documents, including ID Copy, Proof of Ownership, Approved Building Plans, Layout Plan, Occupancy Certificate, Certificate of Acceptability (COA), and Fire Safety Compliance.

Application forms can be downloaded from the Municipal website at www.overstrand.gov.za > Application forms on the home page > Spaza Shop Registration Form or click here.

Health & Building Compliance:

The application must be reviewed by the Overberg District Municipality Health Department, as well as Overstrand Municipality’s Building Control and Fire Departments, to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

Site Inspection:

Following the submission of your application, the Overstrand Municipality will conduct re-inspections to ensure compliance with licensing regulations.

Who to contact:

If you have any questions regarding the registration process or require assistance, please feel free to visit your nearest municipal office where a public liaison officer will assist you.
