5 December 2025: Christmas Lights Festival
GANSBAAI Kersfees Liggies Christmas Lights Festival. 5 December 2025. 6pm. See you there Gansbaai community!
You know the summer season is officially here when the Overstrand Municipality proudly hoists their Blue Flags, marking the start of the 2025/26 Blue Flag season. On Monday, 1 December, the weather played its part, and the beaches were packed as holidaymakers made the most of the sunshine, sand, and sea.
In Overstrand, Kleinmond Main Beach and Grotto Beach in Hermanus have once again achieved full Blue Flag status. Meanwhile, our pilot beaches - Hawston, Onrus, and Castle Beach - are in a two-year transition period, working towards meeting the necessary criteria, such as water quality and environmental management, to eventually qualify for full Blue Flag status.
MMC for Community Services, Cllr Ronald Nutt, said his operational teams have done their utmost to ensure that everyone can enjoy pristine beaches with all the amenities at their disposal.
While Blue Flag status is awarded seasonally and municipalities must reapply each year, Councillor Nutt proudly mentioned that, if all goes to plan, Grotto Beach will celebrate its 25th Blue Flag season next year, setting the record for the longest uninterrupted Blue Flag association in the country. Kleinmond Main Beach will mark its 20th year with the Blue Flag. Councillor Nutt also took the opportunity to thank long-time partner Gerhard Oosthuizen of Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages and his team for their continued support. He also wished the lifeguards a safe and successful season ahead.
Executive Mayor Ald Archie Klaas highlighted the essential role tourism plays in Overstrand’s economy, stressing that maintaining Blue Flag standards is crucial to keeping Overstrand’s beaches on the world map as a top destination. Blue Flag beaches must meet stringent international criteria - too many to list, but including accessible facilities, cleanliness, water quality, and beach safety measures - ensuring that locals and visitors know exactly what to expect and can enjoy their day on the beach.
As we enter this Blue Flag season, Mayor Klaas urged everyone to put their best foot forward: "We depend on the commitment of each individual to keep our beaches in top condition. Let’s work together to ensure we maintain Blue Flag status and continue to offer a safe, sustainable, and enjoyable experience for all visitors."
Residents are reminded that dogs are not permitted on Blue Flag beaches, and the consumption or possession of alcohol is prohibited in all public areas, including the beaches.
