Under the Microscope: Golden-eye Lichen

Lichens are everywhere, on trees, rocks, soil, and leaves. But did you know they aren’t just one organism? They are a unique partnership between fungi and algae (or cyanobacteria).

At Grootbos, you’ll find Teloschistes chrysophthalmus, also called the Golden-eye Lichen. Its bright orange fruiting bodies stand out, surrounded by tiny "eyelashes." Look up into the Milkwood and Afromontane forests, and you might spot them in the canopy!
