Under the Microscope: Must Love Ants!
Meet Paramixogaster acantholepidis, a rare hoverfly with a fascinating connection to ants. Its larvae grow up in the nests of the Small Black Sugar Ant, Lepisiota capensis - a relationship known as myrmecophily, meaning “love of ants”.
And as adults, these tiny hoverflies help pollinate flowers by feeding on nectar and pollen.
A wonderful reminder that even the smallest creatures can play an important role in our ecosystems.
