Understanding Fever Seizures in Children

Fever seizures are convulsions that occur in young children, typically between the ages of 3 months and 6 years, during high fever or severe dehydration. Recognizing and managing them properly can make a big difference.

Signs of Fever Seizures

• Stiffening or jerking of the body, arms, and legs
• Loss of consciousness
• Breathing difficulties or stopping
• Rolling eyes, vomiting, or foaming at the mouth
• Sudden falls without reason

What to Do First

1. Stay calm and ask someone for assistance.
2. Call an ambulance immediately and provide clear information.

While Waiting for Help

• Ensure the child is on a safe surface, lying on their side.
• Remove hazards to prevent injuries.
• Don’t hold the child or put anything in their mouth.
• Avoid cooling them with cold water.

Prevention is Key

• Keep feverish children in a calm, comfortable place.
• Use appropriate medication, such as acetaminophen, to lower high fevers.
• Offer oral rehydration solutions if dehydration is suspected.
