Last night, our poetry group Gansveer gathered at Afrikanos for our monthly meet, and the words flowed like magic. Here's a glimpse into the evening through my words:
In the year of our Lord 2024
The 6th of February precise
The banquet hall
In the castle Afrikanos
In the fiefdom of Pointe Dangereux
Was in readiness
For the monthly nocturnal meeting
Of the Scribes of the Square Table
One by one they arrived
The Bards, the Scribes, and the Poets true
The Listeners and the Storytellers too
They travelled from near and from far
From hamlets and villages large and small
Our Jeanne D'Arc she came from Franschekraal
As does Dries and Susan, Marinda and Karin
From the hamlet of De Kelders
Came our Glenda, Alma and Mariaan
Our Susan from nearby Klipfonteyn
Diana from the village of Goosebay, Jackie and Chris
They came from De Kelders too
Slowly the Scribes, Bards, Poets and Storytellers
Sat at the square table with listeners dispersed in between
The waiter saw to our thirsty needs
He served up amphoras of vin rouge and vin blanc
There was coffee and tea and the best of all
Distillate of fermented barley (whiskey)
And there was laughter and lighthearted banter
With many a true word uttered in jest
As all toasted each other's good health
With a clinking of glasses
The very first poem was voiced by Jeanne D'Arc
And counter-clockwise around the square table
Each shared his or her own unique poetry or prose
Into our ears was poured words of wisdom
Words depicting sorrow and woe
There was pathos and light-hearted poems
We played with the intricate Haiku
And magic permeated the air
With the splendour of the gifted words
All too soon the clock announced the end
To the magical festivities
A final clinking of glasses
Fare-thee-well's until we meet again
At our next nocturnal meet
Jeanne D'Arc
